What's up with arguing

I have seen several threads get derailed because it seems that some people want to argue everypoint in every thread. It gets rather frustrating when you bring up a point on how something works and try and not get it to it with someone and they still come at you. Times like this I wish finsup was still around.

I noticed this weekend was especially drama filled. I suppose the flip side would be that we have a lot of passionate members maybe everyone gets excited to share their opinions and point of views? I was actually talking about the drama with my family last night and apparently I used the phrase "there is more than one way to skin a cat"...meaning there are lots of ways to achieve a beautiful reef tank. But my 12 year old son wasn't totally paying attention and he is now wondering why some of you are skinning cats! You might have some explaining to do next time you talk to him!

Well see there is a fine, but sometimes blurry, line between a healthy debate, and an argument.
I, for one welcome the healthy debates, it keeps people interested, talking and learning from each other. But drawing the line between what is an argument, and a debate, is not always easy, and can be pretty subjective.
That being said, according to masc rules the following is a violation and user is subject to warnings, infractions, and bans for;

2. Infractions will be given and posts will be edited and/or removed for any of the following reasons:
- Commercial posts by non-sponsors (spamming will result in your account being locked immediately)
- Posting negative feedback about a sponsor if you are affiliated with a competing commercial entity.
- Rude or offensive posts directed at another user or person (our mission is to ENCOURAGE fellow hobbyists)
- Injecting yourself into "disputes" that have absolutely nothing to do with you. This normally leads to threads getting out of hand and/or flaming.
- Criticizing other peoples' threads. Please participate in the conversation, but if there is a concern about topics, prices, etc., PM either the creator of the thread OR the BOD.
- Asking for DBTC corals. These corals are given away at the owners' leisure, do NOT ask for them.
- Making threads for the purpose of instigating problems with the general membership
- Making posts that will instigate "flaming"
- Bringing personal problems that do NOT occur on the www.marinecolorado.org website onto the website
- For harrasing/threatening PM's that are reported to the BOD! Screenshot must be provided!!!

If you feel that a post, by anyone, violates those rules/policies, then report it. All members should have the option to report specific posts, and then it flags, and sends a notice to the BOD, who will review it. From there we will discuss and either delete it, serve a warning, or serve an infraction.

Ultimately this is your community, and its meant to be encouraging, and educational, not hostile, or argumentative, so dont be afraid to use the tools to shape it as such.

Anything someone posts on the internet is subject to praise, questions, criticism, or debate. That is even more so true when a controversial topic is brought up (halides vs t5 vs LED, live vs dead rock, closed loops vs DC, etc.) or offensive and unsubstantiated generalizations about entire classes of people are made (such as the newer generation of reefers is incompetent and has achieved nothing the older generations can learn from). It is of the upmost importance that if you are not willing to engage in dialogue with those who may disagree with you that you refrain from speaking your opinion in the first place and if you are willing to engage in dialogue that you are both prepared to debate your opinions and entertain the possibility that you may be at least partially wrong.

I'll offer my two cents on this subject. I think we need to be conscious of the type of community we are trying to build here when we engage in discussions. Personally, I want to support a community where we can ask questions and share our ideas without fear of criticism or personal attacks. This does not mean we need to tiptoe around controversial topics. Even if we have conflicting views, we can still have civil discussions and respectfully challenge each other to think about a topic from a different perspective. The interaction between members on this forum is a core component to the success of this community. The nature of the discussions may also encourage or discourage participation. Let's consider the perspective of a new member and how seeing hostile or negative conversations may deter them from engaging and contributing. I'm asking members to consider how we impact each other when we communicate on this forum and also understand that this community is shaped by how we treat each other.
