I wouldn’t use mesh. It gets filled quickly. I use one of these... https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/bulkhead-overflow-strainers.html. I got a slip one instead of threaded and just pull it off every month or two to rinse it off.

None of you guys have emergency drains?
I dont have an emergency drain but because of automation I wont have a leak. By using an overflow float switch, I can intentionally plug my drain and the return will shut off and latch off long before the tank could overflow and I also sized the return chamber so that even if that fails, the sump level will drop and cause another float switch to shut off my return and ATO. More than one way to skin a cat, but as long as something acts as a backup you're golden. If you have multiple layers, even better.

Until a snail crawls onto float switch or it fails from salt creep.

That would require the drain to fail simultaneously when that float has failed, and the float in my sump has failed, and the outlet that feeds my ATO has failed in the ON position (the return chamber is emptied a d the return runs dry with display water level 1" below the rim of my glass). That would be about as likely as me getting struck by lightning while holding a winning lottery ticket. I also test every float in my system every time I do a manual water change and they all have snail guards.

It could always crash some other way from an oversight (like having all heat and flow on the same circuit that tripped on GFCI with no UPS, which is how I crashed my 125), but I would bet every penny I have that my multiple layers of protection would never result in an ATO or clogged drain related crash.
