They are always pretty aggressive at first. She is asserting her authority over him, but eventually they calm down and settle in together
This^ unless you got unlucky and the smaller one has already turned female before you got it. If that happens the aggression will not stop until the smaller one is dead or removed from the tank.

I'm curious about how many folks have success pairing up two clowns from different sources. Seems like purchasing a pair is a readily available and popular option.

Over the summer I got a large Gold Nugget maroon to successfully pair with a tiny Lightning maroon that was getting picked on in Juan's tank. Getting a pair that is already paired up is easier....did you see Charlies (@Haddonisreef ) pair he was selling. They looked pretty sweet!

I think I still have a chance with these two working out. I did see Charlie's pair for sale and that is super tempting, but I want to keep my female. I've had her a couple years and she was tank bred by a club member a couple years ago.

Update- the two clownfish get along great now. Not because of anything I did of course. Like many things in the reefing world, it just took time.

I took your advice and picked up a 4.5 inch diameter by 28 inch long tube from Colorado plastics. $43 investment, but what the heck, it's worth a shot. I'll make the tube available to club members so it can get some use. I'm going to give this experiment a shot this evening.
Just a reminder that I still have this clear plastic tube if anyone wants to try coaxing their clownfish into an anemone with it. I didn't have any luck, but who knows. I will ask for a $20 cash deposit that will be returned when you bring the tube back.
