Need a Lead Please

#1
Hey everyone!

I am getting my 180 build started, and I need to hire someone to make me a new overflow. I had originally had the thing built to be a paludarium, so didn't have the water level all the way to the top. However, now that it'll be a reef I do want it to hold the full 180 gallons.

Anyone have a lead on someone who can do this for me? Thanks!

I just saw a video that had a very similar tank, it was voted best tank at MACNA 2018. Since you are making a change, maybe a center overflow like this one would work:

Just a thought. Is tank acrylic? How tall of an overflow are you looking for?

If the overflow is acrylic you could get the two pieces of dark acrylic cut to fit with teeth for the overflow glue them together and let them dry. Once they’re dry you could easily laminate them on an glue the corners.

Any interest in removing the overflow and just using a standpipe into the bulkhead? I prefer this anymore since they take up less space.

What a gorgeous tank! Thanks. It's already drilled in the corner, but that is really awesome. It is acrylic. Looking to go from 12" to 18".

https://octoaquatics.com he does custom acrylic work and could probably make you up something. He is reasonably priced as well. He made me a custom overflow for the same reason, that I needed to bring up the water level and it came out great!
Thank you! I will definitely reach out!!!

I guess I hadn't really considered that option. Do you use some sort of grate on the standpipe? Does that impact surface skimming?

You can use a bulkhead strainer. I like these better than an overflow since they take up less room in the tank. ABS comes in black at Home Depot or Lowes.

I’ve also used black plastic canvas as a strainer. Joann Fabrics usually has it in stock black and white colors.

It’s kind of like eggcrate as a go-to DIY product. Only it’s, flexible and could easily be wrapped around a pipe and secured with zip ties. It has very small openings compared to eggcrate. So, you have to plan on it getting clogged if you aren’t doing regular maintenance. However, it keeps even the smallest fish in the tank, not down your standpipes. (Found that out the hard way).
