Thanks to this great storm my tank is pretty much completely dead... I don't know what to do at this point if I decided to start over. Any advise would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear that man. I think that storm really high lighted how important it is to have a generator ready and waiting, as I am sure you are not the only one to have lost because of the storm.

If it was me I would clean out what you can, salvage anything still alive and move into a temp tank until you can stabilize the main tank. Then I would do what I could to make sure it cant happen again.
What part of town you in? Some maybe be able to help if your nearby and in need of an assist.

Yeah, I was lucky to keep power through all the flickers in Thornton, even though I know people around me got hit.

I am now in search of a solid backup option.

Sorry to hear.

I rented a Honda generator in anticipation of losing power (i always lose power) and of course the one time I’m prepared, my power stayed on through the storm.

Will be looking at purchasing a generator in the future

I’m sorry for the loss! I hope you stick with it. Maybe take the chance to reinvent the hobby for yourself?

I know if I had lost everything and there was nothing to salvage, I would run fresh water through my tank for a while. I’m sure the nasty nuisance stuff would survive otherwise like aptasia. After that did the job for a few weeks, I might get back in with a dedicated non-photosynthetic tank or just a tank full of low maintenance softies. Change things up a little.

The first time I had to deal with a power outage and no generator (previous 120), I was heating tank water in a portable cooking stove and hand mixing my aquarium water. Through the night. We got a generator soon after.

I have a 40 gal empty (but has salt water, heated, skimmer.. etc) if you need to put livestock or corals in.

Either through disease, pests, weather, or our own stupidity... we've all had looses, and crashes in the past. I'd say a part from patience, the hobby sure tests ones resilience.

Hope you get through this and the tank is open if you need it.

I appreciate the offer unfortunately despite all of my efforts everything has been lost.

So sorry to hear. What all was plugged into the ups? This has me thinking that my only backup is for a circulation pump and not the heater.

For the cost of a battery backup, a 1000w generator from Harbor Freight could keep a small to medium sized tank running for weeks. They are like $109 but you can always find a 20-25% off coupon.

If you have a larger tank, then you need a bigger one, but they are still cheaper than starting over.

Sometimes even a larger car inverter can get you by in a pinch.

Wind storms usually take out power. Summer can be just a risky around here.

My first saltwater tank, lesson learned. Never had power out this long so I thought my battery backup would have been enough.

I live in Sunny side, so we are very close, what can I do to help? I'll pm you.
Also I sat there for 4 hours heating pots of water with the kitchen range to use as giant heaters to keep my reef alive
