Alright, lets get this started!
Here is my little tank I am going to do for this competition. Its a 10g handmade tank I made sometime ago, and I am going to do a 'lagoon softy garden' style tank. It will be mostly be shrooms and a few other softies, with one small fish, likely a clown.

The tank its self is one I built sometime back from a bunch of scrap glass I had acquired free from some guy on craigslist a few years back. I made 5 40g tanks and this one little 10g frag tank. All it cost me was the silicon, $10 a tube, and the time to build it.

I also won a few things at reefstock this year for the raffles. I won the kessil H160, a box of salt, and that neo-therm heater. I spent $100 on raffle tickets to win those.

I think I still have some more scrap glass outside, so I am thinking to make a small chamber in the back to put some filter media, and use a maxijet 600 as the return pump. Wont hide it very well since its glass but wont cost much to do that. Other option would be to go to plasticare and just get some scrap black acrylic for fairly cheap and use that.
I have a ton of rock and sand on hand, most I picked up for $1 or less a pound. I've been curing it for sometime though, (like 2 years or more now) so it should be ready to go
Still to do: figure out how I'm going to hang the light, and I would like to figure out a simple gravity fed ato for it.

Cost/Spending so far
- Tank (1x silicon tube, glass) $20
- Overflow/filter box (glass/silicon) $10
- Kessil, and heater $100

It is nice looking. Better looking than the 30g I made and am currently running as my nem tank. I have been putting together my price sheet for my build off tank and I just want to make sure I'm understanding everything... If we get something for free we are supposed to charge ourselves fair market value for it right?

That is a nice looking tank you made! Isn't that light for a refugium?
Technically ya, although you can adjust the color spectrum on it to Reef blue or Red/pink for the fuge, so I think on the reef blue it should do fine. Anyway its what I got so just gonna go with it unless something else comes along

Ya no freebies, have to charge yourself something reasonable for it. If its used and you got it free, just look on craigslist for similar items and charge yourself something similar. If you still unsure just list it in you build thread and ask others to weigh in on what hey think is fair.

Okay that's cool. I hope I don't come across wrong, but would the glass you used, fall into this category.
Well that kind for why I put $20 for the tank since I really only used half a tube of silicon for the tank construction. I could add another $10 if we dont think its fair.

Dug around in my shed and found some more scrap glass. Should work fine, got everything I need to make the filter section, just gotta find my glass cutter lol.
Guess I should clean up the tool bench first, which means I have to finish rebuilding this old tool box I just acquired.

Ahh okay. No that seems absolutely fair to me. I misunderstood the silicone part. Sorry!

How are you planning your filter section? Will it be attached to the back of the tank?

No worries. I should've explain better, thanks for catching it ;)

For the filter area, it will just be 4 pieces of glass and silicon them in place. I'll snap cut all those from that scrap pieces, and then clean them up real well before silicone them in place. I'm thinking something like this, (if you can make sense of my chicken scratch)
View attachment 14506

Dividers get siliconed in first and then 2 outer pieces siliconed over those. First chamber and inlet will house the heater, mid chamber will likely be a sponge filter, with some rock rubble, (possibly with an airstone under it), and last chamber for the maxijet

Are you drilling the back for an overflow into the filter section?

What is your plan for siliconing in these glass pieces? If I'm understanding, they will be silconed inside the glass tank you built. Seems like really tight quarters to work within.

That makes more sense to what I was thinking. I was thinking it was going to get added to the back.

Ya that why the dividers go in first. I will basically lay the tank on it back. silcon the two edges of two dividers and press them into place. Then attach the front two pieces in a similar fashion, since the first chamber will be a bit shorter then the rest, this will allow the water to flow in correctly. Let those dry, and then come back and silicon around the front edges. I wont be worried about the interior edges as much, the first bead of silicon should be more then adequate to handle the flow through it.
I'll try and photograph it as I go through the process... just as soon as I find that damm glass cutter lol

Found the glass cutter. Sneaky bastard lol
View attachment 14507

Put the gloves on and start snapping glass. Score a snap line, put the glass cutter under the edge of the glass closet to you. Press down and viola.
View attachment 14508 View attachment 14509

Be sure to sand all the edges of the glass or you will regret it later

4 pieces snapped, cleaned and dry fit together.

Time for some silicon. I had one tube that is about 3/4 used already, but should be more then enough to do the job.
Square them up and just let these ones dry. Ill put in the front tomorrow.

Are you going to leave the back clear glass or put a sheet of black acrylic on the back?
