Beware of fish stores price gauging on Hawaiian fish

Today I returned to a fish store that I have spent over 4000 dollars with in the past month upgrading my tank, I had previously told them some fish I would be interested in and would be in the following week to purchase such fish and some to restock my tank! The store informed me fish after fish that I had wanted and that they had in stock that they could not sell them because of the Hawaiian fish deal! I called bs as I have been following this hole deal as it's scary what could happen you don't have to stop sale on any such fish. ( unless you are going to wait and price gauge people down the road) which I called the shop out on doing and left.I understand upping the price but to refuse sale not right! So on the brighter side I went to aqua mart and bought all fish that I had wanted over 600 dollars worth! Kudos to Jeff and the crew over their for doing their job and selling fish. I left their and called the other shop and let them know that I had purchased the fish I wanted and would not be back to do buisness with them!!! I also called around and many other fish stores that have these fish for sale. Sorry for the rant but it left a bad taste in my mouth. ( buyers beware) and get informed .

I'm glad you got what you wanted, I didn't know aquamart was still around. I may pay them a visit soon.. I know the people with licenses are still allowed to collect until it expires so it's not as grim as it seems so far.

Yea it's just unfortunate that some will try and take advantage of people!

thanks for the info.Real quick though, Did they not do this because a) they thought it illegal to sell the fish or b) they were waiting for the market to tighten up? I could see both, but b ) is especially sinister.

They are definitely waiting for the market to go up! And trying to bs people who they think don't know anything! The sad thing is it's not the employees it's the owner!

We actually received a Hawaii order the day before the ban was announced, weird coincidence. Are you talking about us at Aquatic Art Inc.?
No it's not you guys I've not been in your store yet ! Are you guys still selling the Hawaiian tangs ? Yea I've called around and almost all fish stores still have them for sale! I'm sure they will be going up in price which I don't mind. I understand the ban probably will stick this time but who knows. I have no problem paying for a quality product and good customer service .

We do have Hawaii tangs, yellows, naso and kole in stock along with flame wrasses too. You should come by and check out the shop regardless of the Hawaii stuff, we have a ton of corals, fish, and inverts in stock right now! Hope to see you soon.

I was just in the store in question. I didn't know it was them at the time, but I asked about the details on whatever it was that was going on in Hawaii. They employee explained the details of the collection ban and how they had caught some heat for putting their recent shipment on hold. (The fish were all for sale today.)

The employee explained to me that their source's collection license had expired and that that was the last shipment from him. They put the fish on hold, as he explained to me, because they were considering keeping them for their displays.

Now maybe he's lying through his teeth, and this is all one big bamboozle., but I seriously doubt it. The fish store we are talking about here has, as far as know, the cheapest prices in town - by a long shot. (I mean, just by saying that, I probably gave away their identity to many of you.) Early in the summer, I bought a pair of 250 Gyres with controller for $300. That was their normal price of $400 (equivalent to BRS) with a 25% sale on top of that.

So it strikes me as funny that an LFS known for rock bottom prices would suddenly get into the price gouging business.

I got a stock list yesterday from the place that supplies Stone, if that is the place that you all are trying to say without saying it.

BTW - the collectors did not have their licenses suspended. They get to use them until the expire - no renewals at this time.

Also, BTW - those fish come from other places than just Hawaii. They will be a bit more from some of the other atolls and Marshalls, but they will be available.
