Changing salinity

Hey all,

Anyone know of a site that gives a break down of how to change salinity? i.e. if I have a 5G bucket of 1.024 and want to make it 1.019 or something how much fresh water would I add/replace? I figure there must be a calculator out there. I know it would be different for changing it upwards based on the salt type but down should be a constant.

Edit lol my math was way off. Lemme answer this in the morning when the jet lag wears off. I've done the calculation in the past though.

Nevermind...formula was right I just didn't punch it into my calculator correctly to confirm, haha.

(current salinity)*(current water volume)/(target salinity) = end volume of water

So in your example:

(1.024)(5)/(1.019)= 5.24

So you would need to add about 0.24 gallons of freshwater to your current bucket.

If you're trying to get exact at that volume, the temperature fluctuation may be an issue in getting a reading. .001 change per 10 degrees Fahrenheit up/down. In case you didn't know.
