Kessil only SPS tanks

#4
Sethsolomon, that's a pretty broad statement. I have 2 over a 40 gallon and have extreme SPS growth. Do you have a Kessil? I would have to agree that a T5 Kessil combo may be optimal. However, cost effectivness, health of corals and longevity are paramount in this hobby and therefore opinons, while welcomed in the forum, are at best subjective.

I've only found one tank that is kessil only - over on RC (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1783476). He seems to be having success. If I made the change, having someone local to bounce questions off of would make me significantly less nervous about it.

Is there any importance on running T5 at the same time? I've got T5 running with my current system, but it's mainly for even coverage.

That's what I was saying. It seems to be the overall concensus that t5 for its coverage (i run 2 Kessil 360we to do the same) and Kessil or some quality LEDs gives the best look and health of our animals.

I welcome you to post pictures of your tank to prove me wrong. Every time this question is posted on R2R no one is willing to post pictures of their tanks. So I think all people that say they love kessils are full of hot air.

Think the original question was over a LARGE tank and that stuff on the forums are subjective. Your personal experience should matter more that what you have heard or feel about a select brand of lighting. My tank is small, has 2 Kessil 360we lights and most importantly a reliable, healthy and stringent system for the health of corals.

Whatever you say.
When you say this, to me, this is you saying you are ashamed of your tank. You should be proud of your tank. I know I am proud of mine. This is a picture 4 months in on my tank. It may be algae ridden but I am proud of it. Stand up for your tank.

I am using halide, VHO, and LED. Not that it is relevant.

Here is one with a 180g one section he is using an single kessil and the other 6ft he is using one of the new 700's http://www.reef2reef.com/threads/terrys-180-sps-peninsula-upgrade.218181/page-4#post-2598087

and another with the 700's: http://www.reef2reef.com/threads/my-180-gallon-build.222466/#post-2595659

the tanks are still a bit too young to tell.

That's a brand new tank man. I'm not gonna argue semantics with you. Your opinions and comments are valid to you and I respect that. I've been doing this a long long time and have gone through every type of lighting and can unequivocally say, it's only a small part of overall success. In trying to help the person who asked.

Interesting and awesome looking combo... I wonder if there is any measurable benefit from specific T5 bulbs in combination with the Kessils. Purely aesthetic with my current 52's from what I can tell. The guy in the R2R post has a good point though, kessils shimmer like crazy the T5's probably calm that down a bit.

The t5's fill in some of the missing spectrum that the LED's don't quite reach not to mention adding a lot of par(I know kessil claims it has a high PUR but IMO that is a cop out because we don't have a way to measure PUR). Also, as you said, help reduce the shimmer.

it's a 150DD 36x36x27.
Ahh I see your delema :p trying to get the spread on a 36in cube is hard. not to mention that the 27 in depth is hard to deal with.

I would just try and work on figuring out the sweet spot for the 52's over buying a new fixture. You will run into the same problem with the Kessils as the 52's and just adjusting to find the fixtures sweet spot for your tank. And if it is just having a hard time getting the corals to color up but growth is good, just add some t5's instead.
