I do employ a hammer and chisel from time to time, but I have some larger encrusted montis, leptastreas and favias that i would like to keep as whole as possible. I guess they were all frags once, maybe I'll just end up smashing them back to frag size again and start over.

I've always had luck getting clean flat cuts with a handheld circular saw. Just something else to consider. I've used one to cut live rock with a metal blade but I assume itll cut encrusting coral fairly well
