Staining and Varnishing Tank Stand in Place?

We just replaced our lighting and while we had the canopy off, we restained and varnished it. We would like to do the rest of the stand in place but would like advice on whether that can be safely done without damaging critters with fumes, etc.

Has anyone ever done this type of work on a running tank? Safety tips for our critters?

ive never done it on a running system but my opinion would be that the fumes wont bother the fish and if you are really concerned about it run a fan to keep the area ventilated

Everything is variable here, product being used, ammount, cure time, ventilation, barriors?
