Setting up my new nuvo while I'm waiting on my ro and I have a carbon and sediment filter but even with it the water reads at 150 tds. I'm just going to cycle my tank got some live sand and rock. Will it be ok to cycle with?

You can do an initial fill with tap water after you dechlorinate it. A lot of people who have large tanks will. It is the evap where you don't want to be using tap all the time. That being said, the water in Colorado is quite good and you could probably use tap and be just fine in most tanks, but why risk it? Our tap water in the midwest was like 450.

You need to discard the first 5-10 gallons of a new RO. If you are getting 150 TDS from the unit, then this is why.

My inline water here in Thornton has gone down quite a bit since last year. From ~240's down to 150. Been saving me changing out the resin more frequently.

Would using distilled water not be a viable option?

Before I got my RODI unit, I would get the 2.5Gal distilled water jugs from Kings.

Why not just buy your saltwater from a LFS for the initial setup and cycle? Then when your RODI unit comes in you can start making your own. It would suck to start out on the wrong foot and be fighting algae, high parameters, and whatever else just because you cut a quick corner right off the bat. Or ask a MASC member close to you if you could buy some RODI water off of them?

Using tap for an initial fill probably won't make a bit of difference to anything - you cannot take this same approach was top off and water changes. However, if you are anywhere near longmont, I have 50 gallons on hand at all time.

Jordan, I thought you lived way down south. When did you go up to Longmont?
