A message from the Founders:
At AlgaeBarn, LLC, we believe in challenging the status quo. The creation of AlgaeBarn occurred because of the severe lack of premium, live food in the saltwater aquarium market. Even though the benefits of live foods are highly touted, it is nearly impossible to find at any local fish store – and if you do, the quality, freshness, and price are highly questionable. Our competition will tell you that dead phytoplankton is good enough, maybe for them, but we don’t believe so. It lacks the exact thing we desire in our aquariums – biodiversity and life.
We were founded on the belief that you, the customer, deserve the highest quality live products with excellent customer service. Through the use of science, engineering and determination, we believe our cultures are of the highest quality phytoplankton and copepods. Our Biological engineer, Sean, performed independent academic studies upon photobioreactors and has had an offer with the DOE for microalgae research in Washington.
We are currently culturing four strains of live, marine phytoplankton and have designed a proprietary mix that demonstrates very promising results for coral growth, copepod cultivation and zooplankton development. Furthermore, because it is a live product, water quality is also improved.
Currently, we are offering one strain of copepods, Tigriopus. And because of the continued support of the members of Marine Aquarium Society of Colorado, AlgaeBarn has started to cultivate two more strains of highly desirable copepods: Tisbe and Pseudodiaptomus. We will keep the community updated with our progress.
However, we don’t want to stop at just marine aquariums. Phytoplankton has the potential to solve many of the world’s problems. It is a complete food source, providing an array of both amino and fatty acids. It has potential for energy development, reducing our demand upon foreign energy while consuming huge amounts of greenhouse gasses. Our future vision at AlgaeBarn is to provide education opportunities for K-12 students. We would like to incorporate algae-related curriculum into the educational system to provide insight into sustainable, symbiotic, and closed-loop systems. This education opportunity will provide future generations with an early understanding of information that can change the world.
