Overflow box

Hi I am setting up my aquarium and my first sump. How do I start a siphon from the u shaped plastic to the overflow box?

i fill both sides with water and get a piece of flexible air line tubing stick it in one end to the top of the U and start sucking...make sure the return pump is on. pinch the air line and pull it out.

How big should the air line tubing be and which side do I put it in

i just use like a 1/4in i think it does mater to much just as long as you can suck air through it. i put it up the side the is in the tank.

Ok but how would I put water in the other side when it goes right through the hole in the bottom

oh mine has a seperate chamber for in one side for a constatne water level in the back. you might have to close up the outlet fill the drain tube and then a little of the over flow box

good no problem at all. keep an eye on it. i run 2 on my 55g just incase one breaks syphon

You should also make sure that if you do lose siphon that your display tank will not overflow and inversely that if your return pump goes out your sump wont overflow. Just set your water levels accordingly in your sump and DT to avoid any floods
