Re: Raising clownfish

I am doing about 2.5g a day out of 10g of water. I am using aged tank water from the reef as opposed to newly made water. Thoughts?

I normally don't like to use tank water from the reef but that's just a personal preference.
I was getting a lot of bacteria build up when I used tank water. I was able to get more larvae through metamorphosis when I used new salt water that had been mixed up for 24hours+.
Some breeders use reef water so that should work for you :)

I thought about it a little today, and I am starting to rethink my use of reef tank water. Being as fragile as the larvae/fry are, adding water that could contain anything negative, including pathogens, may not be the best idea. I will switch to your method.

I unfortunately am down to 10 larvae after whatever crash happened yesterday. :banghead:

Nice work mike looks like you've got it down. I wish mine would spawn. Now you have to sell em when they grow up and get some cash for more reef stuff.

Hopefully that is the plan!

Be careful with the BBS, I've heard they may be the cause of sudden fright syndrome.
I use BBS very sparingly. I usually start feeding them Otohime A when they are old enough
for BBS.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought that they would be the cause. I will have to supplement the bbs with oto. And cut back on the bbs as I fed them rather heavily. Don't want to lose anymore of these little guys. Thanks for the info.

Re: Raising clownfish

Last batch survived to 15 days post hatch. At 13 DPH I lost 6 of the 10 I had. At 14 DPH I lost two more. On day 15 the two remaining had died.
Wondering if the bbs were the cause. My rotifers did crash on day 13 and I was unable to supplement their feeding of bbs with rotifers. (The crash was caused by my own error when I did a water change on the the rotifers and did not dilute the saltwater I used, which was water used to do water changes for the fry, and subsequently shocked my entire culture of rotifers) Maybe a longer time of feeding rotifers is needed before transitioning to bbs/other foods.

Collecting the larvae from this last spawn right now. I decided to let them hatch in the main tank this time, instead of hatching them separately from the parents as I have done in the past. A very time consuming ordeal trying to catch them with an airline tube.
Perhaps this will help with survivability.

Hopefully I will be able to get some rotifers tomorrow.

Dang, at least you're learning through the process. Where you getting Roti's from?
