72" Current Outer Orbit HQI+T5+LED --$600

Fixture has 3 x 250 watt hqi halides + 8 x 39 watt T5's + LED moonlights. Comes with basically new galaxy ballasts (turned on a few times to test light), mounting legs, nib hanging kit, 2 Ushio 14k b hqi bulbs, ATI Blue Plus bulbs and New wave blue bulbs. Bulbs are 10 months old. Everything is in perfect working condition and I just took everything apart and cleaned it. I also replaced the stock fans with super efficient and quieter ones. I was gung ho on using this fixture until I came across a geissman infinity I couldn't turn down. This light is damn nice and I spent a good long time bringing it up to my standards for my tank. Firm on price as the ballasts are basically new and I could get 100 each on R2R for them and Light itself is worth way more than 300.

72" Current Outer Orbit HQI+T5+LED --$600

Deleted my derailing comment. Good luck with the sale. Great set of lights for a reasonable price.

I actually found one that was beat to heck and restored it. It was a real process but I'm really happy with it. Lol I spent an exorbitant amount of time making this current outer orbit fixture in really good shape right before I did the geissman. The current fixture actually has a couple of advantages. 1) there is active cooling. The geissman has none 2) the LED moonlights are really nice and 3) switches in the fixture to turn on and off t5 and moon lights.

But then you'll not have halides.
I know there are some who swear by halides and I get the argument, I get excited when I see them but for the amount of power they use and the heat they put off which you then have to compensate for with more equipment and active cooling systems, and the expensive bulb replacement, and the huge fixtures. I think Id prefer to go with a good set of leds. Have you seen Munches tank? Beautiful with radions, and leds are still relatively new to the hobby imagine where we will be in 10 years. Awesome light though T dont get me wrong Im not knocking what you have, that is definitely a good light. Its just gonna soak the power bill, any idea how much your bill will go up a month?

It's funny. We all worry so much about that power bill. Truth is its probably 30 or 40 bucks a month. That's the price of 1 frag. I have 2 tanks, 1 under halides and 1 under AI LEDs. There is no question that the halides grow stuff better and the leds look better. Overall I think halides are the better lighting.

Hmmm I thought 3 250 watt halides running 10 hours a day would cost more than 30 bucks a month. Shows what I know lol. However since Im not looking to farm my corals I would be more interested in how they look as long as they are still healthy and growing and save the 30 bucks for a frag :money:

Here is what is interesting though. Under all LEDs my corals eventually lose a lot of pigment and tend to brown out. Thus, LEDs are essentially diminishing returns. Corals gradually look less and less colorful. U really need to supplement with something else.

You have tried the the radion pros with the same results?

Seems like a sweet light. I too have always done LEDs then I added T5's and have been really happy with growth and color with the extra spectrum. I would think the best combo would be all 3, halides T5's and LEDs. Best of all worlds. The trick would be getting the color the way you want. GLWS

Lol eco tech would love us to believe that they sell a light that produces superior light. Truth of the matter is that the only real difference between individual LEDs is the bin # and that only relates to efficiency. Radios pros have a decent spectrum but I've tried a bunch and they all grow coral more or less the same way. It eventually loses some color. The thing with LEDs is that they have very precise wavelengths whereas MH has a broad spectrum. While the manufacturers like eco tech show us a nice curved spectrum, the truth is that it really has lots of spikes and holes. This is why the coral Browns out. With MH everyone is happy because the complete spectrum is there.

TrippleT probably has more experience with LED manufactures than anyone I know! I've never known anyone else that has tried and been successful with more makes and models and combinations of LED than him.

most people that have had the success he has with LED would argue that LED grows corals as well as MH.

The fact that I have personally seen his success with LED on many many of his tanks and he is still switching from LED says something.

Well I dont see anyone here arguing the point. I haven't ever used halides therefore have no basis for comparison have used t5s and leds never seen anything brown out but perhaps just haven't done it long enough. I have seen other forums state a combination of lighting is probably the best. Thanks for all the insight!

The cool part about this discussion is that no one is wrong. Silver I was like you about 3 years ago... I was die hard LED and out to prove that they could do just as well as anything. I had (and am setting up again) a killer thank that was under a combo of AI vega with custom pucks to get full colors and Maxspect mazarras. Then I met a guy in San Antonion with a 10 year old reef 250 gal.. He was old school and only ran halides. His tank is absolutely mind-blowing. We got to know each other and I convinced him to put LED over half of his tank and leave the halides over the other half... Same corals on both sides with a few minor diffs. After about 2 months the difference was striking, The halides were just better in all respects except for viewing under blue spectrum.. The coral growth and color was so different that I came off of my high LED horse and started supplementing with T5... Then I realized that an increased electricity bill and the cost of new bulbs is a small drop in the bucket as far as what we spend in this hobby....... So I went back to Halides with LED royal blue supplementation for my frag tank... LEDS have their palace and I definitely like them mostly for the temperature control... But now I have a basement and its cold no matter what so not an issue.
