So i bought some rock and it had been bleached still had the bleach smell when i picked it up. I let it soak in fresh tap water as well as rinsed it a bit in buckets. Today i let it soak in a heavy dose of prime for 8 hours. Is it safe to put in my tank. also tank is a new set up so not much to kill maybe some bacteria and a few pods and serpent stars. also in another couple weeks im buying 50 pounds of good live rock so thats when i will start to really cycle the tank. Before any one asks why the rock was bleached ....im not sure but i was told there was alot of aptasia growth.

Bleaching is a very common practice in this hobby. I've bleached every piece of rock I've got from another member or store. I don't know where it came from, I don't know what's in it. I made the mistake 1 time and my really nice 30g turned into an aiptasia farm.

I only rinse it several times and I've never had an issue. You have neutralized the bleach with prime as well as I did the same thing before you picked it up.

You don't need liverock to cycle a tank by the way.

so its safe for the tank at this point from what you have seen in the past. I just don't want any bleach to harm anything in the future, and this wasn't anything other than making sure its safe to use at this point i am aware that people bleach rock I have never done it myself but i am also very new to this hobby being as my only tank was a 9 gal nano.

Whenever I have cleaned anything with bleach I am always sure to let it completely dry out before putting it back in the tank

Re: bleached live rock

Nice thing about prime is you cant overdose with it. Very safe. Best thing for the bleach is the sun for a few days to dry it out.

Leave if outside a couple of days to dry out and it will be fine. I have done this and added it to a tank with livestock with no ill effects.
