So what I want to know is can I run a ro/di style canister filter with a carbon filter like you get at lowes or home depot on my tank. I use them to prefilter the water that goes into the tank.
If not why? I am tired of buying little carbon chunks that fall all over the floor it is kinda pricey and I would rather turn of a pump spin a canister off put a new filter in and go about my day.

The only downside or issue I'd see is keeping that carbon block filter clean of debris and buildup of detritus. I suppose if you ran the tank water through a few socks before getting to the filter it'd help. Just seems like flow through that type of filter may be restricted fairly quickly if your tank is at all on the "dirty" side.

Not to worried about that if that is a problem I can get another canister and a cloth filter to filter that out. But my tank is clean as can be lol

This I know, lol. ;) I was just mentioning that in a more general context, but it sounds like you thought of that already and have got it covered.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to pull this off. I run a flat carbon filter block in the canister of my planted tank and it does the trick...I don't see your idea as being all that different. I say go for it and report back. :) Maybe even just run the filter on a smaller setup to iron out any issues before modding your DTs filtration.

Edit: said I run a "block" but technically it's just a carbon pad...I use those hbh "cut to fit" pads.

Basically the same reason you're looking at using that cartridge...less mess and hassle during media changes.
