Clown mating (funny and serious)

My son picked out a nemo at Aquamart on Saturday night. They took to each other right away. The new clown was all "hey there, pretty lady!" And she was all like "oh my! Look at that stripped piece of hotness!" And he was all "look, I know this may seem forward, but I love "The Notebook" so can I come in?" And she replied "your new digs are over here, can you sweep sand?"
And by Sunday morning they were "paired" if ya know what I mean!
Ok serious part: She is a 3+ y/o true perc. He is a small (~1.5") ocellaris. Will the mate and lay eggs? Will I have a chance at being a clown papa?

I know I've read posts on RC about hybrid pairs spawning, so it's not impossible.

Curious though, did you recently lose a female clown? Because I thought a lone male (like the one in your tank) would automatically turn into a female.

I think that occurs in a group of males with the absence of a female. I don't think i've read anything that said a single male would change.

Clown mating (funny and serious)

I know the one I've had for 3+ years is a female. She's mated with 2 other makes before. She was the bigger of the 2 I bought originally, and after the smaller died about 1.5 years ago, I put her with another small misbar. Those 2 paired for about 3 months before he dove into the overflow. She's been alone for about 6 months until this weekend. I didn't see any aggression between the 2 at all... They took right to each other. If they mate and lay eggs, will the eggs be fertile?

Based on my freshwater breeding experiences the eggs should be fertile, as long as the genes are compatible. You generally do not run into issues with infertilization until you actually have a hybred fish your trying to cross. Hybred males are generally always 100% infertile, again, based on my freshwater breeding experiences and may not be the same with saltwater, but biology is biology so I would assume it would be the same.

Hybrids are definitely possible....the first clutch I raised was from an onyx perc and a regular ocellaris.
