Clown Suicide

Very sad day as one of my clowns has decided to jump and try and make a break for it. I've never had any problems with my fish jumping (including my firefish) has anyone else had a clown jump before? Since I have one left and he is looking kind of lonely I was wondering if just buying one clown would be ok? I'm also looking into getting a nem because both clowns have hosted mushrooms that aren't happy about that.

Yea my aunt had a 3 gallon pico I took care for awhile that the baby lien decided to go carpet surfing. I had a wrasse jump out of my 90. I had a yashi hashi jump out of my 30 that has a glass lid, managed to get out the finger holes to take the glass off. It happens we had no clue why. You can get a lid from brs and still look very nice. I even have a canopy on my 90 with mesh on the back and somehow the wrasse still made it out. Lucky the wife saw him and put him back. Needless to say he hasn't tried it again.

I tried having a lid for a while and all the evap and salt creep was bad plus it made my temp rise in my tank :/ I might try the mesh top and see if I have better luck with that. Clowns just seem like clumsy swimmers it was the last fish that I would think to try and commit suicide lol. Do you think I can get another clown for the other guy I still have?

Yea I'm in the same boat you are. I lost one of my baby clowns for some reason. And now I need to get him/her another one. You can do it. Either get one smaller or bigger than the one you have so they pair off better. Best to get a smaller one since the one in there now will become dominate in the tank.

I hate it when I lose fish ;( Did you lose one of your snowflake clowns? I'm probably going to get a smaller one and see how he does.

Yes the one out of my 90 not the ones in the 30. No clue where he went or what happened he's been doing great and eating great the past 3 months. They are about an 1" so??? I think my coral banded got him possibly?

I was so afraid my coral banded was going to eat the fire fish because he kept clipping their tails so I got rid of him. My little clown seemed happy and always ate. He/she was staying above the power head for a couple days because I introduced a new fish. Maybe it got stressed out??

I've always heard that coral banded shrimp are peaceful with other fish but mine wasn't and I wouldn't doubt it if your shrimps ate the clown.

Exactly..... i watched my clown jump out of the tank when i introduced a new fish after that i did some seaching and clowns will only jump when stressed or they know that they most now get away from something

I'm glad I got rid of the shrimp for sure. I guess my little clown really hated the potters angel I put in there. It never did that with any other fish.

I've had several clowns jump, it doesn't get easier picking up the poor little dried up guys.
That is def the worst part! I was so shocked when I glanced behind my tank and saw its little body! I know it was the Potter's Angel that probably scared it so bad it jumped. For some reason those two fish weren't getting along. The angel wasn't chasing the clown or any of the fish. It just swims back and forth peacefully. The other clown and mandarin don't have a problem with it, but my two fire fish are VERY UPSET! Any thoughts?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has had a clown jump so I feel better!

I have had two clowns (mated pair) jump three times. On two of the occasions I was able to throw the clown back in, and although it looked dead it began breathing heavily at first, then swimming a little bit and about 24 hours later it was back to normal. Sadly my female jumped out about a year ago and she ended up dying. I had had the mated pair for a little over ten years, so it was sad to see her go. I was worried about my little male so I ended up purchasing another clown hoping that my little male would become the female. Turns out that the new clown I purchased became the female. I have since purchased an anemone (about 6 months ago) and the female clown lets the male clown in only at night. I put the anemone at the bottom of the tank on purpose so that the clown stay away from jumping out and so far it has worked well. Good luck!

That is so sad! I understand your shock and heartbreak. I wish I was able to see it happen so it had a chance of living. Unfortunately, it happened when I ran to the store and I saw it dead behind the tank when I was doing a water change. It must have happened when I left and I didn't notice when I came back right away ;( I'm definitely interested in another mate for my surviving one with a nem. Hopefully, no more fish will try and jump (especially the lone ranger clown that's left).

Update: After days of not seeing both fire fish I moved some rocks around and they came out for a short while. They are back hiding but poking their heads out to watch the angel. Both fire fish still look healthy (phew). The little clown seems to be doing fine without its buddy.
