Coral Questions

#1
Ok a couple questions.

Do all Montiporas have the possibility of stinging other corals? When I get to the point of having a Monti. What is a good starter one?

Also I have seen zoas on rocks and some in the sand bed. Is this just personal preference?

What are your favorite types of SPS and LPS? I am going to try and have a true mixed tank.

I really like the look of brain corals, acans, favias, some chalices.

I am trying to get an idea of placement before I begin.

All corals have the ability to defend themselves against predation, that's how they survive and grow. That being said, my montis haven't ever stung or otherwise done anything negative in my tanks. Chalices on the other hand are pretty mean when close to other corals... My mummy eye completely nuked a frogspawn colony in less than an hour!! I run a carbon reactor to help alleviate alleopathy(sp?) issues, but if a coral is ****ed, its going to try to kill its neighbor by whatever means it can utilize!! Keep some space between everything, and learn about the specific coral and placement before buying, and you should be ok!

It's not as bad as it sounds! I personally don't let corals touch in my tank ever! (well, on purpose at least!) some corals get along with similar corals ie. frogspawn and hammers, most acros can be close to each other. Some coral (chalices) can't be anywhere near anything else, I'm my experience. As you get more corals and talk to more people, you'll get a feel for what you can and can't do. I suggest visiting other members houses to see what they do and ask questions! There are some good books too...

In the end once your tank is matured and there is a lot of growth, corals are invariably going to touch. You need to start trying to kind of deduce now, and imagine what things will look like once all the coral takes over the rock.
