I think it would work great for RO! I'm going to check them out. Don't know how salt would work though.

I have my saltwater in a food safe drum.
The Costco price is extreme, I'd check out the site that othercents posted.

What about getting the 55G food grade drums from http://www.cozerowaste.com. They would essentially be the same and would just need to be cleaned. I think someone else was using the 55G drums to do both salt and RO/DI.
Wow, what a difference. What would be the best way to clean them for reef use? They recommend bleach.

I took mine to the car wash and cleaned them out with the high pressure rinse, then filled with vinigar water for 2 days.

+1, the food safe barrels only had water soluble food in them, so they shouldn't require any bleach, but vinegar would at least sanitize the drum.

Cant you also use the rubbermaid brute trash cans
Some do, but I'm not sure if it is recommended, however they cost $21 for a 32G at Home Depot while the 55G drums are $20. I would sanitize a Brute Trash can the same as I would the drum when I get it. The drums are also sealed with a screw top that fits a 3/4" NPT (male threaded PVC). If I was to create an automated RO/DI and Salt Mix station the 55G drums would be what I use.

I have one similar to the 275 gallon IBC Tote that I will be cleaning out next weekend, got it from a buddy for 20 bucks, will take DAYS of cleaning and bleaching to get it cleaned up though (its got tons of syrupy crap in it). I plan on mixing salt for myself and a few friends in mass with it. I've got a nice pump to mix and keep it circulated, that I salvaged from my neighbors pool, 2,000 gph flow. Can't find a name or anything on the pump other than the rating though.
