Disaster Avoided - Apex saved the day

I woke up this morning to an auditable alarm, texts, emails, and hearing all kinds of noises.... any reefers worst nightmare for sure.

However this has a good outcome, the overflow is set to shut off my return pump, and alarm. That worked perfectly and I was able to look and find some algae growing in my overflow had dislodged and blocked the return within the outside box of the overflow. This for sure would have been a disaster of flooding.

My tank is not drilled, I have an overflow box. The tank, and the overflow (as well as a lot of other places) have float switches so a flood won't happen.

Phew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ensure you test your float switches from time to time as they can get salt creep and not work. I clean them monthly, just as important was any other maintenance.

I'm so happy to be drinking my coffee and writing this vice cleaning up water.....

Reef on friends!

Good to hear! Apex is definitely the controller I'm going to get when my reef keeper goes to crap. Many more functions! Would suck to see your reef go bad.:) I'm going to check my overflow and float valves now.

I've been using my apex for 2 years, and have my float switches still sitting in boxes. Keep telling myself I'll get around to it.

Guess I need to get on it :)

I don't know how many times my apex has saved a flood on the floor. It had more then paid for itself. I'm glad there was a good outcome.

This is why I need to get one as much time as I spend away from the tank!

For, it's peace of mind. I never worry if when I come home - is there a flood. Did a heater malfunction. Did the power go out...

Ha! After reading this I remembered that I shut my e-mails and audible alerts off while I was doing some work last week! Just turned them back on, you might be saving everyone's reef with this post today!

Wow, glad your tank didn't crash! I will have to invest in an Apex next.

My apex combined with a redundant system of float switches saved me countless times. The important thing to remember is to test the system when adding features especially the particular failure you're trying to prevent. Make sure there are no second and third order effects you didn't plan on. The more complicated you get with apex, the easier it is to introduce human error in the code.
