Yes or No?

If you had a unit, would you hook it up? A friend gave me a unit and not sure if it does more harm than good.

I hear they kill pods and tan parasites lol. I wouldn't use one. Even with algae there are other choices.

I used to have a few UV leds on my tank but changed them out. I have thought about using them again.

Interesting. Picked up 2x 25watts in that unit, so will watch this thread to see what the thoughts are. I personally have always had a small one w/ sw. They were prob under rated and these are bulbs I don't care to replace frequently, so I still scrape glass weekly. Does help with bacteria and parisites. But so would an ozone generator.

I was using one for several months. The bulb would burn out about every 6 weeks to 2 months, and cost me $45 every time. Then I talked to Will at Premiere fish and reef at the January meeting and according to his research, on an average size tank, you would have to use several hundred watts of bulb to kill any unwanted parasites and it would have to be at a trickle flow. Most of the units on the market are only good for killing off free floating algae (green water). Since my water was clear, and I use a carbon reactor, I decided to stop using my UV. Didn't notice any change in anything in my tank or chemistry, and I still have to clean my glass every few days regardless of whether the UV was running or not.

I'm getting ready to install one to help clean up some green water that was hidden by LEDs but is very evident with MH.

Side note: you guys that are running UV, you run it 24/7 or on a cycle? Sorry about the mini hijack, just curious.

Whoa manners. I think the OP would enjoy that your contributing to thier post and furthering the discussion. At least I would hope so, or I may have hyjacked a few to many.
I used to have one built into my return line, and when it died I got one to just run off a powerhead in the tank. If your going to run one I would just run it all the time, as they are typically low flow and don't always see a lot of the water column for long periods of time.

Hey CRW, you should drop your 2cents here, as these started in the pond hobby.

Ask 10 people, get 10 different answers. I use with 5 Tangs in tank. run 24/7 for 2 years, replace bulb yearly and have never had any issues. Is it working? I cant prove that its not.

Great feedback!! To hook it up would cost me only around $35 to buy a new bulb. I'm out of CO now but when I get back in a few days, I'll post what the UV brand name is and its wattage. I'm leaning towards giving it a try. REALLY appreciate the comments.
