What kind of standpipe is in the overflow? If its just making noise at the outlet of the return i think most people put a filter sock on the end to calm it down. Maybe a little more info will help solve your problem- what size tank? return pump? bulkheads?

its a dorso stand pipe, 75gallon tank, return ehiem 1262 that goes to a chiller and then to my tank
1 inch bulk head drain
and yes i have put a filter sock, but in a couple of days it starts bubbling to the top

it seems like alot of air is being pulled in the drain its kinda like when you have a glass of water and you blow into the straw and all the bubbles splash everywhere

Ok if you have a 1" bulkhead make sure your durso is made out of 1.25" with a reducer at the bottom that should quiet it up a ton. If it is already like that then the only other things i can think of is to slow down your pump, or it could be the hole on the top of the durso is to big or to small. Thats about all i can think of at 3 in the morning. HTH

Ok so it sounds like a toilet flushing. make sure there is a hole drilled in the cap on top of the durso, also make sure the hole is not clogged. It is supposed to breath air but it needs to be the right amount and take a look at the article im posting the reducer plays a big role and alot of people try to build there own standpipes not knowing that it is needed so i would make sure yours has one. 2 things- fold a towel and cover the overflow with it, and place a sponge under the overflow pipe in the sump.
All that air is good, helps keep redox up.

I have a side question on this topic. Will a good filter sock act as a pretty good bubble trap or no? Any other good bubble trap menthods that dont involve adding more baffles?

I have seen some use them to help reduce bubbles. Also saw one that was pretty neat, guy used a 4" section of pvc, he cut large teeth out of the bottom and simply had his drain tube go into the 4" pvc, trapped all his bubbles without adding a baffle.

OP: if water level is fluctuating alot that would point me to think that the water is siphoning itself, then releasing. As stated, make sure your durso is 1/4" larger diameter than your bulkhead (use a reducer at the bulk head)

On my pipes going into my sump I use a "U" made out of pvc on the bottom right at the water level. Still get the same flow, just slows down a few of the bubbles and makes it 3 times quieter. So basically if that made no sense, straight pipe going down, "U" shape pvc at the end of the straight pipe, made it so it is flush with the water level in my sump.

filter socks work pretty good as bubble traps but they won't get the tiny microbubbles if there are any.
You can also try a large piece of PVC that sits on the bottom with notches around the bottom edge to allow water to escape.
fill the PVC with rock and let the water pass over/through the rock and escape out the bottom where it's notched.

Does it have a hole drilled in the top of it?

If it adds 5 ft to the head you'd have less gph going to the return which should help the problem, not make it worse :D
