Frag tank issues

So I set up my frag tank and its been running for about 2-3 months now. It has cycled and I have only been putting zoas in it. However the zoas have poor polyp extension and only seem to be about half the size of the ones in my main dt. Here is a little more info.

2'x2'x8" glass tank
tek 24" t5s 1 white, 1 yellow, 2 blues(same as main dt)
eheim 1252 for return
maxijet 1200 in tank for circulation
20g sump
dsb and lr
tunze 9002 skimmer
ato
1 asterina and 1 turbo snail for algae control
ph 8.3
nitrate 1ppm
nitrite o
ammonia 0
calcium 420
dkh 8.6

Pretty much same parameters as my main dt. So now I completely baffled as to what the problems are. Here are a couple thoughts...
1. Not enough flow in the tank
2. No food in the tank as it is only corals, main tank has lots of fish poop for the corals to enjoy
3. Put too many zoas in the tank too fast. However there are not that many in there.
4. ?????????????????????????????????

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

frags or colonies of zoas?
Light Height ?
how long have the corals been in the tank?
if they are frags how long have they been healed
what is the light cycle?

i have noticed in my previous tanks that it all really depends on an individual basis of a frag some seem to get extension faster than others in the same general location

in my opinion if the coral in your DT is getting a lot of extension i would assume it is reaching for the light. if the coral is in your frag tank and not getting much extension it is receiving enough light that it does not need to extend any more.

I thought about the temp too but monitored it and it is a stable 78. Light cycle is 9a-9p.

I would also think it is lighting. If the zoas are used to the 120, there will be greater par in an 8" tank vs a 24" depth. You could also try the nutrients by taking dt water and adding it to the frag system.

It was a frag tank prior with corals. I don't run carbon, would you recommend it? Also will try cutting the light cycle and maybe move the lights up more. I don't get zapped when my hands in the water so I don't think there is stray current. Thanks for the thoughts.

ding ding ding, we have a winner. started doing water changes with water from the main dt and things are already looking better. :)
