Has anyone tried this???? Seems kinda cool!

I make the Alk about once a month. It makes a gallon of solution, and I dose 40ml a day. I tried to find dowflake, but only found a 50 lb bag, and bulk reef supply sells calcium chloride for around $15. I've made 2 gallons with that and still have 7/8th. The 50 lb bag would have lasted me forever!

You can get calcium chloride from Sam's club. Excel snow and ice melt 50lbs for about $20. It is 97% compared to the lower percentage for Dow flake. SpaceOps on SCMAS has a post about using the Holmes-Farley method with an adjustment for the higher purity calcium chloride. There is a calculator out on the web for using the recipe and making adjustments based on your readings, your tank volume and your desired level.

Have you guys noticed similar dosing amounts between home made and name brand? For example the home made is suppose to mix at 1,900meg/l (ALK) and 37,000ppm of calcium? Dose it seem to be consultant with the BRS brands?
