for those who run ro/di, does the di resin needs to be tightly packed? i bought 1 lbs bag but its not enough. about 1" of space left after filled. do i need to get more or will this work?

I haven't been able to find out why...but from what I gather the resin will expire faster if it's not packed tightly.

Is there a sponge on the bottom of your refillable cartridge? If you're using a standard 10" cartridge it should be difficult to fill with one of those standard DI resin refill packs...if that sponge is missing it'd explain the extra inch of space.

The sponge is typically on the bottom of the cartridge. Dunno how it'd effect the filter if you just placed the sponge on top...but it may be worth the extra step to empty out the cartridge, place the sponge on the bottom, then refill it.

resin has to be super tight. The sponge will allow too much movement. I use to not get all of the BRS resin from one bag into my cartridge but starter really packing it and now it will all fit barely. And the sponge and the bottom when I screw on the lid is totally compressed.
