I have a 29 gallon biocube on the matching stand. I want to build a DIY sump/fuge for it using a small overflow box that will have a 200 gph flow rating. I am looking for any input on this, type of material/ thickness/ brand and power of return pump/ and a good skimmer that has a small footprint and is less then 20 inches tall. I am thinking of using 1/4 inch acrylic/ maxijet 1100 http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+4587+18989&pcatid=18989. Any way I am just hoping to get some good input as this will be the first sump that I have made. I would also like to get any suggestions on design and how to waterproof it.

thanks.

I have a 20g sump on my frag tank. I use an eheim 1250 for the return and a tunze 9002 for the skimmer. Both I am very happy with. You can find both of them used on RC anytime for pretty cheap. The skimmer needs to be in a 7 1/2-9 inches of water though to work but the footprint is very small. I would use thicker acrylic personally but I am sure you can get by with 1/4". I would also recommend just buying a small fish tank for your sump, adding some baffles and calling it a day. Would be much easier. Same with the overflow, you can find a used cheap one on RC. Keep it simple baby. :)

I am in the process of making one for my BC29. All I need is one more piece of glass to make a 18x18 cube to fit under the that tank. After I make it though, I have no clue what to do though... Daniel used to have a sweet sump/fug for his frag tank that I really liked... Maybe he will chime in for this.

thanks for the info 120greefman, believe me I would much rather just buy a small tank but with the dimensions of the stand I wouldn't be able to fit even a 5 gallon tank under there.

So I have a stupid question. I am planning on using flexible vinyl tubing for the plumbing for my sump. I was wondering if you use pvc cement to seal the tubing or if it is only held in place by hose clamps?

I dont belive vinyl will bond well with pvc cement Id use hose clamps. Why not just use spaflex? that works great with pvc glue and wont get any kinks like vinyl does.
