is a hang on fuge worth it??

#1
I picked up a hang on fuge a month ago only bc it was dirt cheap...

I have been wondering if its even worth using. I'm planning on putting macroalgae and maybe some reef mud. I'm not sure if its even worth the hassle. Really how much could this benefit the tank? I would guess its 24 inches long and 4 inches wide. Not much room for stuff.

Fyi...its on a 50g breeder. Canister filter and seaclone skimmer (don't knock it I paid 5 bucks for it and I'm on a budget).....live rock, fish, and some soft coral.

Really I was thinking on saving the money I would spend on a light and reef mud. Then sell the fuge and pick up a better skimmer.

I don't think anyone has come up with an exact science to what size would be the most effective or ineffective fuge. I think most of us would say something is better than nothing and bigger is always better. A small fuge like that could be a good pod breeding ground as long as the flow was slow enough that they don't get blown away. Along with that you would get other benefits from the micro algae.

I love running simple systems but it all depends on the bioload. I have a 40 gallon barebottom cube that has had zero issues and all I run is a 1200gph koralia and that's it. I have only LR in there and it has only LPS and zoanthids, no fish. It doesn't get alge and I do a water change, 5 gallons, every Sunday.
