KIVA

Hey, is anyone else on Kiva.org? My wife and I have been on here for about 2 years and have made 19 loans already. Its really fun and if you have never heard of it you should check it out.

They are having a deal that if you sign up with a new account, you get a free $25 so you can make your first loan for free.

If you use my link we both get $25 so we can both get a free loan. Its a great cause and I suggest at least checking it out.

Its pretty simple.

So Kiva finds people (mostly living in poverty) who are looking for loans. Usually by getting this loan, they will be able to pull themselves out of poverty. Then they post their info on the website (www.Kiva.org) and people can loan out money, in $25 increments. You usually get paid back around 8-14 months later. Then you find someone knew and loan out again.

My wife and I have $200 in Kiva that we continue to re-loan. We have made 27 loans so far in these countries:the Philippines, Viet Nam, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Ukraine, Bolivia, Mongolia, Togo, Palestine, Mexico, Peru, Paraguay, Colombia, Pakistan, Mozambique, Cambodia.

We usually loan to women, since it is harder for women in most of these countries to get loans and just simply to survive. You do not gain any money from these loans and yes, you could not get your money back. But it is for a good cause and its fun to see how big of a difference $25 can make.

If you use my link above, you get a free $25 so you can make your first loan. You just sign up, find someone to loan to and click loan. Pretty simple =)

Here are some interesting facts from the Kiva website:

As of March 31, 2012, Kiva has distributed $300,209,450 in loans from 744,558 lenders. A total of 390,791 loans have been funded through Kiva. The average loan size is $392.13. Kiva's current repayment rate for all its partners is 98.94%. Kiva's website ranks in the top 9,000 of all websites worldwide and ranks in the top 4,000 for the United States.

Also, 80.4% of Kiva loans are given to women. Which again is a HUGE plus in my mind because it is so hard for women in these countries to get out of poverty.

I am a giant fan of Kiva and I love sharing them with everyone I meet because I think it is such a great and easy way to make a difference.
