Lesson learned

So yesterday while I was at work and my girlfriend was home, she texted me to say the return pump was sucking air. Weird since I just filled my ATO bucket the night before. She then proceeded to tell me the carpet was soaked and water was pouring out of the sump. I had her shut down the return pump and protein skimmer. She had to leave to go to school so she threw down some towels and left. I stopped by Aquatic Art and picked up some buckets and borrowed a shop vac. I got home and figured out the problem. My filter sock was dirty and the water was pouring out through the top and over the rim of the sump. Since about 3 gallons spilled out, I ended up having to dry the area. So I emptied the DT and the sump, moved the tank and stand, cleaned the area and put it all back together. Took about 6 hours. Everything seemed a little stressed but alive. Keeping fingers crossed.

lesson learned: keep filter sock clean and below the edge of the sump.

Yeah, luckily the girlfriend was home and heard the pump sucking air and was able to turn everything off. That saves me for sure.

Definitely! I had a reefkeeper - my 3 year old would wake up at night if it beeped which saved me from several catastrophes. Did u have to reaquascape it? At least it wasn't completely set up.

Glad to hear total disaster was averted. Also sounds like it was a good thing the ATO didn't keep adding water

Scott Feldman says unless you are changing your filter socks every few days, they are doing more harm than good. As you discovered they trap a lot of organics and if left in the system those organics breakdown like they would anywhere else in the system. I'm really glad that you averted a crysis, as I had a similar thing happen when a powerhead fell into my sand bed and my filter sock clogged up with sand!

Thanks everyone. Tank seems to be doing better now. A couple corals are still ****ed and my Yasha has yet to come back out. Hoping he's just hiding and not dead. The ATO is a JBJ and has a fail safe built in to not keep filling which is good.

Corals are all open and happy again, found the Yasha. So no losses. Yay.
