Looking for opinions on sand

I am getting ready to rebuild my tank, I have ordered the dry rock, and am thinking about the sand bed. I have always tried to do 1.5 or so inches deep, and looking at my current tank it is closer to 2 - 2.5" deep. I do not like the look of a bare bottom, and don't have the room for a true DSB. With that said, what are your opinions of how deep the sand bed should be, and why?

I will probably use the aragonite sand that is fairly fine, but not super fine.

Also, when using this stuff. Do you rinse till it is clear, or do you just dump it into your tanks? It seems as if I rinse forever and it never clears up, and I end up with a cloudy tank for a day or so.

When I first got my sand, I poured it into a plastic storage tub on my driveway. I took my house and just flooded the heck out of it. While your hosing it down, mix through it real god with your hands and then place it in your tank. This really helped me out a lot with the fine dust particles. Hth's

If you want the bacterial benefits you want 3to4 inches and alot of ppl complain over sand storms with fine sand so go with bigger sand

I haven't had issues with my fine sand so far. I threw in some sand sifters too and have lots of flow. I assume most people dont point powerheads at the sand lol. Most initial sandstorms work themselves out within a couple of hours

I keep about 2-4" on my sand bed.

i use the same size it sounds like you are thinking of. Think its the "Special Grade". Can't complain about it and have had no issues with it.

I only have about 1.5 to 2" in both of my tanks. Pre rinsed in a bucket until mostly clear then into tank. Just run filter floss and it will take most of the fines out of the water.

I like to have 1"-2" of sand. I've read that you only benefit from a deep sand band (DSB) when it's 6" or deeper. I've also read
that any more than 2" of sand could create anaerobic areas in your bed which, if disturbed, could cause hydrogen sulfide and other
nasty gases to be released which wouldn't be good for livestock. That said, I've seen really nice tanks with 4" of sand and they hadn't
run into any problem.

Huh I read that at 3inches you get the bacteria and at 6inches you get a layer of different bacteria did I read wrong?
