Main circulation pump

My in-tank powerhead (a Jebao WP10) just died and I've been needing to replace my main circulation pump for some time. I've got 4 1" returns at the top of my 42 gallon tank and am thinking about just putting in a large single return pump to create a gyre instead of having water sloshing around the tank. I'm keeping mostly softies and zoos with a few hardy SPS thrown in to tinker with. Two questions: Any reason this is a bad idea? Anyone have a favorite pump at the moment? I'd like something that's external for space and heat reasons, and am seriously considering spending the extra $$ for a DC pump. Something that I can wire to be controlled by my Apex is even better. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Just a thought - the most common cheap DC pumps are the Jebao. I have two of them and are super happy. But, I have heard that they tend to leak and make poor external pumps. I believe that they can be controlled by Apex with a hacky thrid party interface, but I have never tried it. But, to be honest, I only turn it on / off - never had a reason to adjust speed with Apex...

They are a little pricey, but ecotech released their new dc pump line, the vectras they seem pretty cool and work with the wxm for apex

I was eyeballing those, but already have the VDM and don't really want to have to buy another module. They're also really, really proud of them. I'm kicking around the idea of 2 Waveline DC4000 since they're Apex ready. Both would cost about what 1 Vectra would. That'd give me the ability to run each on 2 1" returns and either alternate sides, run both equally for gyre, or put one in for circulation and one on closed loop and pulse for waves.

Actually, on that note, what's the current thinking on random/chaotic flow vs. gyre? I can set up my tank for either pretty easily. I know that Jake Adams has been advocating hard for gyre, but am not sure where actual results have landed over the past couple of years.
