MP 40 flow question.

#1
Alright, what would you guys do? I ave a standard 120g and I was rethinking my flow setup. I have a mag9 return with two eductors as my return, a large koralia and an a single mp40. I was just watching some youtube vids of 120g tanks with a single mp40 only creating a nice wave effect without the eductors or koralias to get in the way of the wave effect. i have a ton of flow in the tank but it is straight and laminar flow not the nice wave/swaying motion. Should I ditch the eductors and koralia and just use the mp40 and try to create a wave effect. It seems like the sps woud benefit more from swaying than tons of direct flow. What do you all think?

If you have the newer MP40wES, I would agree with craiger. You should still be able to get a nice wave going with the Koralia and eductors. Use the wave tune mode to find the wave action you like.

Granted I have a smaller system..but I had similar issuez with the returns in my tank when trying to create a wave effect with an mp10.

It took some time to figure things out, but if you are able to redirect the outflow of your pumps, you should be able to get a wave effect. Just need to make sure that a significant amount of laminar flow isn't interfering with the pulsing from the vortech. The easiest way I found to accomplish this is to turn off all the other pumps, dial in a nice wave, then turn your pumps back on and redirect the outputs until you see the wave starting to come back. From there you may have to go back and fine tune things a little, but it was a much quicker process than trying to tune a wave with all that interference.

Good luck.

Unfortunately I have the older mp40 which doesn't autotune. I think I will turn off the pumps and see what I can get. Thanks for the advice, I'll update with results.

I wouldn't bother with the wave mode. Its a nice visual effect, but does nothing for the corals.

Reefcrest of Lagoon are much better if you have the ES model.
