MSU classroom bio tank, Please advise!

#1
Hey all!

I am currently putting together a reef tank as an independent study ( 1 credit ) for our biology department. We have been talking about it for about a year now and the lab coordinator finally got the go ahead! Its a small step in getting more attention on our ocean that will have an impact on students. Right now our equipment is rather abysmal. We have a really old and scratched up 75 or 90g tank and store bought equipment that looks about 10 years old. I need to go through everything once I get it all washed up from the failed attempt 2 years ago. Right now the only good thing is plentiful RODI water we have access too lol.

If there is anything you can offer in the way of advise for a classroom tank I would be very appreciative. I have my own tank for a while now but have never operated and maintained anything bigger than 40g or a public tank. I will be making the equipment list and expected budget next week which should shed some more light on what to expect.

Thank you and until then,

Bill

Thank you so much! I am slowly working with the lab coordinator on some basics before we start gathering main tank equipment but I will definitely pick your brain on the topic. So far its looking good, I might even be picking up a quarantine system today for the project. I have pictures from last semester I will find and post up within the next week or so.

I'm also hosting the swap in November where you can get an idea of the level of automation I have in place.
