Old coral

So, what do you do with old coral? Through acquiring setup stuff (rock, sand etc) I've ended up with several pieces of old dead coral, typically mixed in with dry rock. What do you do with them? I have an old brain coral that is literally the size of a human brain and several other large pieces. Are they useful in any way? Decoration? Doorstop? Rudimentary weapon? What say you?

Keep it in the sump. I have a bunch of Tonga's and other corals in the sump. Act's like live rock and helps increase surface are for your bio filtration.

The other use i've seen for it is using it as frag plugs if you cut it into small pieces.

Stick it on my desk at work and call it the skeleton of the brains of students who got on my nerves. See who figured out that a human brain wouldn't have a skeleton.

Can you tell I teach middle school?

This is what I did with mine after taking down the last tank. I had collected a lot of old SPS skeletons from failed shipping, tank issues, and other failures. I also picked up the clam shell at a store once I started my "art project". The skeletons were just too amazing to get rid of. This is the closest thing I've had to a reef tank for a few years now...

That is just ridiculously cool and a great idea!!!!

My dead colonies just sit out on my porch as a beacon for fellow reef and coral lovers :)

They make great pieces for putting encrusting corals or zoa on imo. add them to your live rock and put something on it that will cover it

That is the perfect encrusting/zoa garden scape

Lots of interesting stuff here! I guess there really isn't a typical use for it. I do think the brain coral is going to end up on my desk though.

At the resort I stayed in Cancun recently, all the walkways, literally 10+miles of them, were all lined on both sides by dead brain corals. Found many on the beach as well. I brought a few back that are in my curing tank with the live rock.
