overflow intake gurgling air

#1
So I have a one inch pvc pipe for my intake on my built in overflow ... I was usin a 460 gph pump and it was running perfectly. I just put on a 630 gph pump today and now its struggling for air and being super loud... any ideas on how to modify it or fix it? I have already tried drilling more holes in the cap and removing the cap all together and it seems to have changed nothing. So any ideas I'm willing to try!

Might be too much flow for the intake size. My overflow does that when theres more water than it can handle. I put a valve on the return so i could adjust the return flow so the intake could better handle the volume. This worked but after a while i ended up just going with a dual overflow set up.

I thought it was based on the turn over rate. Dont quote me cause im sure im wrong, and im certain someone else can give the correct #, but you want to turn the water over something like 10 times an hour.

An example would be a 180 gallon set up would need 1800gph worth of overflow and return to be turning the water over 10 times per hour.

But keep in mind your intake has to be able to handle the return.

Hopefully someone who knows more about this will chime in.

Ok sweet ... yeah my tank is a 110 with a 30 gal refuge so I would need about 1100 gph... so I pretty much have to figure out another overflow system or build another one for it to handle that kind of turnover?

If you have more than one hole drilled you can set it up to siphoned feed instead of gravity. No noise and a 1inch pipe can easily handle 1100 gph.
Herbie or beananimal style overflow if you have the room.

Herbie is easier and you only need two drains to do it. Google some info on it. By far my favorite overflow set up.

So if your overflow is large enough you can convert your drain to 1.5" durso stand pipe. This will work for sure if you have the room in the overflow. I have done this many times with great success. If you want come into the store and I can show you how.

Is the sump end of your drain pipe submerged? If it is, try raising it above the waterline in the sump. A 1" drain should be able to handle that size pump without a problem.

+1 I would at least try a 1.25" durso setup.

Great white? I would assume the store would be lol

And the"sump end" is not submerged but close to it... the cap that is on top is not pulling in water

Thank you guys all for the help! And thanks fishguy69 for showing me how to fix the dorso pipe I had! Converted it from just a 1 inch to a 1 1/2 inch and now it just sounds like a peaceful waterfall instead of a loud gurgling annoyance! Lol

are you getting too much air into the intake? I was having the same problem with my 90G with 1 inch piping. it had 3 holes drilled into the cap. I tried for the longest time to figure out if i just needed more water. Turns out that all i needed to do was plug one hole in the intake, which caused the right amount of air flow and now its a nice quiet whisper and my sump and pump are all doing great still.

Not getting enough air was my problem... So what I was told to do was remove the 1 inch pipe and replace it with a 1-1/2 incher and at the bottom convert it back down to the 1 inch and it works perfectly now! The only thing I can hear on my tank is the water falling in to the overflow... Which just sounds like a faint waterfall lol

Ever consider the herbie as was suggested? You wouldn't need to drill any more holes if you could hard plumb your return line behind your tank and over the top so you can use your existing return hole for a herbie setup (adding to your durso). Depending on your setup, may be worth the peace of mind. Can google "diy herbie overflow" it or ask around here and get feedback.

Plenty of horror stories on the net about someone with one overflow having theirs clog (causing their sump water volume to end up on the floor). Life getting stuck in there, or something else going wrong, etc.

I converted my one overflow tank to this peace of mind setup (except instead of a herbie, i did a bean animal fully using my 3 holes as drains). As I kicked a half-full 5 gallon bucket over once, couldn't believe how much cleanup I had to do...I shuddered to think of my 55G sump dumping to the floor...
