Price of a coral

I did a group buy a few years back on a Jason Fox Crazy Fox chalice - $250 for 1 eye. It was retailing for $1,000 a eye when purchased. This was the most expensive coral I bought. I turned around and sold a 20 eye colony a couple years later for $1000. Currently it sells retail for $400 a eye. Once I listed it on Reef Central it was sold and paid for within 30 minutes. I had numerous hits on it right away. I should have sold it for double!!!!! I was even reluctant to list it for $1000 thinking it would have sat there for weeks with no buyer.

Here is the coral:

I am actually pretty much against "designer" coral. IMO it ruins the hobby. However I wanted to make money on my initial investment, so I guess I am part of the problem in that regard :(

btw, when I originally removed the colony from my rockwork a tiny tiny sliver of DNA from the edge of the chalice stuck on my rockwork. 6 months later I have 4 eyes that grew from it!!

I don't have an issue with it. This is like any other industry in the world and these people are out to make money. Yeah I have to admit I hate when I spend a bunch of money on frags but when it comes down to it this is my hobby and I have never skimped on anything I do. You should see the pc I built...

I almost find the price points can add to the allure of the hobby. If these frags were free I don't think people would really appreciate them as much either. Say what you will but I will always be willing to pay what I have in my pocket at the time to get the next best thing. Granted i wont ever pay 1000 dollars an eye for a chalice, I will spend 100+ on a zoa if I really want it and once I get it I will treasure it and likely appreciate it more than something I paid 10 dollars for.

it's basically the cheapos who are complaining and there are plenty of green slimer and nuclear palys for them I suppose.

I really like people who take the risk to cherry pick unique corals, name them and propagate them. I don't care too much for the ones who put names on anything and jack up the prices - think ReefRaft.

This is a risk... ask somebody who dropped a few K on a coral and had it die.

Without cherry pickers, there would be no crazy as a fox, motor city mayhem, all zoas would be brown and green and SPS would be minimal. No diver would go through the trouble of finding a gold torch when a brown/green torch would do.

Keep in mind guys we as vendors can have a ton of $$ invested in these corals, chalices wholesaling for $1500-3g's polyps to $500 and even euphyllia up to the $5-600 range. And it's a huge risk for us!! Just think of watching a $1,000 coral rtn in a matter of days :( might as well have taken 10 franklins and lit em on fire...
