That's not a one of the other option IMO. You for sure should run a protein skimmer and if your phosphates are high then you might need to run a phosphate reactor. But better options to try before running a phosphate reactor are algae scrubber or refugium.

I have a refugium on my tank but for some reason either be the food I feed which frozen Mysis and every couple days dr g's clam feast or maybe the ro/di membrane needs to be change. I have phosphates.

So nitrates are 0 and phosphates are high? or are your nitrates high as well? Also, clam feast is a coral food isn't it?

yea it is.. I do weekly water changes so my nitrates don't usually get over 5ppm if that but no mater what I do I always seem to have phosphates.. I am using an older api phosphate test kit I don't know if that part of it.

Order a salifert test kit or hanna checker for phosphate they are more accurate. So if you still have nitrates in your tank that means there is still more room to boost your refugium. I avoid recommending running a phosphate reactor until you have your refugium running at max capacity.

how about the red sea have u used that before? I have the red sea mg,cal, dkh. test kit and I like that one.

I have no clue on red sea test kits. I have one but never used it. I think the majority of the people in this club use the hanna checker. I think I might be the oddball that uses the salifert kit.

I think the Hanna checker you want to get for phosphate is actually the phosphorus one since the low range phosphate isn't as accurate. I double check mine with LaMotte and that gives me pretty accurate and consistent readings.

If you don't run a skimmer you should definitely get one as they pull out all kinds of organics.

I run a skimmer on everything but my zoa tank. However, I do run a gfo and carbon reactor on that tank.
