I currently have a 40 gallon rimless im replacing with a 70 gallon. The current tank is plumbed to a basement sump. There is also a 65 gallon tank in the basment plumbed to the same sump.

I have to move the 40 as the 70 is going in the same spot. Im not using the old sand as i have heard that can cause problems. So I have new dry sand which i have already rinsed well.

My question is, can i just add new water to make up the difference, move the rock, fish, corals,... Over to thenew tank and be ok? There should be no cycle, will there? Will the sand cause a cycle? I have alot of live rock to handle any die off in the sand if there is any?

Any opinion, advice, suggestions would be appreciated. Ive been in the hobby for about 2 1/2 years so im not new, but im the first to admit i have alot left to learn.

Question on tank upgrade

So what I did when I moved the 225 into the 360 was saved all of water, live rock, and the top layer of the sand.
When I did the move I kept everything wet and tried to have the LR out of water for as little time as possible so the sponges wouldn't die off causing a cycle. I put all of the fish in a holding tank with some LR and all of the LR with coral went into other containers.
Once the old tank was out and the new tank was in I laid down my rock that would be my base filled the new sand and put the old top layer of sand back on top. This helped to keep the dust down. I had help so while the tank filled I added the LR back to the tank until everything was back except the fish.
I waited about 24 hours until the little dust that was in the water settled then I added the fish and finished topping off the tank. Make sure you have extra new water because I think I had to mix 80 more gallons than I had planned. When you add your water try to disturb the sand as little as possible the dinner plate trick works well for this.
I did my move with only two other people. I may have had a small cycle but not huge. Barely noticeable but I also had tangs to clean any algae growth up. Good luck.

I'd also get some dr.tims one and only. Bacteria in a bottle. Works well.
Good call on a bacterial additive.
