sand choices

which sand is everyone using now? when I got out oolite was hot but it seems a bit small as I plan on quite a bit of turbulence in my display. everyone seems to like the seaflor special grade, I guess id have to see it in person but it looks really coarse.

I have black sand in my display and like it alot. I just buy it at Petco, so it is nothing special. I like the way corals stand out against it.

I had thought about black this time. I'm going thin sand bed this time around. My previous two were were right in the wrong depth of not enough for DSB and too deep for easy maintenance. 1" this time.

We tried black sand in one of our smaller tanks, and found that it was magnetic, which meant equipment issues. Particularly with our pumps

We got our sand from Marco Rocks online, and loved it. It's the real deal. Great size, looks like it was shovelled off a beach in the Bahamas, delivered priority mail, and cheap. I do recommend rinsing and checking it, but I'd recommend that with any sand.

I had heard that as well, Black Sand with the magnetic issues. The cheapo stuff I bought didn't react to a magnet and I've yet to see it in any pump impellers when I clean those. I will say that some white sand has mixed in and now it is more of a salt and pepper look...seems like when I rearrange my rock work white sand floats around which makes sense since my display used to use white sand.

Anyway, I too run a shallow sand bed. Easy to maintain.

I have sugar fine sand for this build. I do not like it as it blows around too much and it also traps too much crap and tends to be nasty just beneath the surface. I would go with the Tropic Eden if I could do it again. I may slowly remove some sand and add some in the future.
