So I was curious what you guys thought about this idea. In talking to someone recently they suggested that I get a couple of large flats to allow my water changes to evaporate so I can reuse the salt. My concern was that the desirable elements would be lower and the undesirable elements like nitrates and phosphates would be left behind. What do you guys think about trying to be more environmentally friendly this way?

For me I just pump it out and pump it in. I only siphon the sump every couple of months. So I'm only dealing with water but yes the dissolved organics that would be present there too.

I would avoid this approach, it is no different than not doing water changes or pumping your water change water into a barrell and using that for water changes instead of fresh saltwater. Everything that you took out of the tank to preserve water quality with a water change will just get added back in.
