Should I...

Ok I was considering saving some of my water, say 20-25 gallons from my current tank to put into my new tank to help it cycle quicker. Is that a good idea? The main reason I'm doing the new tank is because I had a horrific aiptasia outbreak. I know spores go flying once you stress an aiptasia but if I collect the water like I do in a regular water change before I break down the tank do you think it would be safe?

Seems risky but I really want to shorten the cycle time. I am hoping someone else has gone through this and has some helpful information to contribute. If anything some expert advice.

Thanks in advance!

From everything I researched when getting into this hobby...the risk is too great for negligible results. Everything I've ever read is that it "could" help, but just doesn't have the same impact as seeding with live sand and rock. With the aiptasia issue, I would definitely go safe rather than sorry! just my .02.

The water column actually carries very little of the bacteria you are trying to capture and assist in speeding up the cycle. I would recommend against it. My opinion of why to use some existing tank water is more for the critters as it is the water they are use to and "might" help reduce a little of their stress. If you have aiptasia, I would also recommend not using the water...unless you like them...

I was going to say the same thing. When I moved my 46 gallon (40 min drive from one location to another) my tank could not fit another coral and fully loaded. I did not use any of my original sand or water. to my supprise I had a 0% loss of livestock. Everything seem to take it as a simple water change.

ok I will go ahead and use new water. the sand and rock are new, though the sand is instant cycle. I will still wait and make sure everything works out. Marco rock states that their rock is precycled so it shouldn't be too hard to cycle.

DId you cycle the new tank? your not moving LR or sand? If not and not waiting 4-6 weeks grab some seachem stability, Ive had very good luck even with sps with it
