So Close

And yet so far.

Been mixing salt an filling my tank as I have been able to this week. A 50gpd RO/DI is extremely frustrating for an initial fill up!!

I got so close last night before I ran out of water!! About another inch of water until it starts into the overflow. And then 20 or so gallons for the sump.

It was EXTREMELY tempting to use some tap water, but I just calmed down, had a beer and thought better of it. All the while staring at an almost full tank with a layer of sand and rock and a powerhead in it.

Once you are finally set up the money stops hemorrhaging right? lol

As they say in this hobby, patience is the key. At least it will be up an running this evening.

Haha it does get better after the initial outlay for equipment. At least if you buy quality upfront so you aren't just upgrading everything in 6 months

It's the only hobby I know of offhand where you spend the equivalent of a small country's GDP, and your main goal is to keep things from leaking on the floor/starting a fire/dying. And then they do anyway. So you spend another small fortune to rebuild it all. And hope for the best.

I was just up at a fellow reefers house and he had one fish that cost 3500!

FULL!!!!!!!!!! TANK RUNNING FINALLY!!!!!!!!!

Well, almost. Was running for a few minutes. Then I noticed a drip on a PVC return line. It didn't leak when I tested it in my garage last week. I missed gluing an entire joint. Now waiting about an hour to turn the pump back on.

WOOHOO!!!!

Just turned on the pump, live rock has been sitting in the tank for a few days while filling. Girlfriend noticed the first inhabitant. Must have come with the rock.

My wife has a nack of finding that ****. She loves looking for Trochus snails since they have been having babies lately

I can't believe the thing survived. Picked up the live rock last weekend and immediately got sick. Didn't have the motivation or energy to start hauling 150 gallons or so of water from my basement to the tank so I just mixed up enough saltwater to throw the rock in a small tank with a powerhead and heater. Then I moved it over to the big tank when I started filling. Massive temperature swings and salinity swings while filling the tank I'm certain. I was sure the bacteria would live, didn't think any creatures would survive. Resilient little suckers aren't they! Hoping that is a good type of worm and I don't have to start hunting it immediately.

Found some things out about my setup in the first hours of running that I did not notice while testing in my garage. The gate valve on the full siphon line of my overflow has an extremely slow leak and started to drip. No spare so I put a cup under it and will deal with that after work today. So much for reusing an old valve. The Durso siphon line in the overflow has a small horizontal section and I can hear the water making noise as it travels through, not a lot, can't hear it over the television or anything, but not acceptable to me. Gonna pick up some spaflex on the way home and eliminate that problem.

Glad to be finally running. Going to wait a little while before I move the rock, snails, crabs, etc that I cycled in a small 20 gallon tank for a couple of months over (cycled the tank, then added the inverts ). That will become my "set up when I need it" QT.

So much work left to do!! lol
