My porcillopora has turned clear and like translucent. Is this a sighn of too much light? Its about a foot under a 240 watt Led. Also my green birdnest has turned brown, its at the top of a 120 watt led. Please give advice to what i can do.

I have a green birdsnest under a 120w LED also and it's green and thriving. It's actually only about 6 inches under but it's green and growing, has pink tips from the new growth. It does look brown if I have the lights off though. I do only run the whites with blues about 2 hours a day and blue the rest of the time.

Do you dose anything?

I have had my sps(acro dominated) aquarium under halides, then t5, and now LEDs. As long as you are running 300>600 PAR it should be fine. Anything more is just wasted electricity. What color are the LED's? How long have you had them? What are your parameters? Filtration? Bio-load? Feeding? Give as much detail as possible.

alk is fine nitrates 0 cal fine, flow is good. 75 gallon with 3 little fish. i use ceramic balls for filtratration. someone told me if they get to much light they turn brown. i think maybe lowering them would help get the color back

How old is the system? Browning corals mean not enough light or too much nutrients, opposite of what you are told. How do you dose? Ceramic balls for filtration?? Please elaborate.

You say alk is fine, calcium is fine, we need numbers, also what is your magnesium at? Is the sps aquacultured, maricultured or wild? We need very specific details to help.

cal about 410 mag 1350 alk 7.0. all the other basic params amonia nitrite nitrate ph are good. i just dosed so it should raise by one meg/l. the filtration is very basic. they hang on the back. one has ceramic bio balls with sponges. they other uses bio wheels with activated carbon. i have a reef HOB skimmer that is capable up to 135 gallons. system is just a few months old. the birdnest came from the denver aquarium they sold them at this convention they had in march. i dont know how they aquarium got them. i guess they came from the wild or they might have got them from a coral farm. could the browning be due to phosphates cause nitrates are 0 when i test everytime. all of them are brown but some are bleaching and the tissue is turning clear but still there.

Corals from the aquarium would be considered aquacultured IMO.

SPS is very finicky. With some corals bleaching and some browning in your system I would believe its unstable water parameters and newer system. It is very very important to test for phosphate. IMO it is the second most important thing to test for besides alkalinity. When your phosphate reaches a certain level it inhibits calcification. How exactly are you maintaining alkalinity? Are you dosing once a day, week, continuously through pumps?

How are you removing nitrates from your system if they are reading 0?

btw ticked off SPS can take months if not years to get back to its former glory.

Also, from my experience birdsnests are some of the hardest SPS to care for.

i dose with Bi onic 4 times a week. buffer alk and calcium. use live rock protein skimmer mechanical filtration low bio load to keep nitrates low. So what can i do? i just need to get my water tested for phosphates first.
