No idea where but I would like to follow the progress. What are you making?
I really like the look of shallow tanks I was thinking 48x24x12 with a glass wall over flow. I was also planning on building an all glass sump. I really hate cleaning the acrylic dividers and overflows on my current tank. Called edgewater glass. They can even get low iron glass for 19$ a square foot

Re: Tank build

Sounds like it will be a sweet build... try hillcrest glass, I know they can get star fire(low iron) however I'm not sure on the price

48x24x12. That means ill be coming to you if I have any questions. With how shallow it is 1/4 thick glass should do fine right? This will we my first ever actual tank build. Mark Sherman briefly explained the process. It doesn't seem difficult at all. I was told any clear silicon as long as it doesn't have the "mold defender will work, has anyone ever used black silicon? Any certain brands preferred?

No, 1/4" won't be anywhere near strong enough. With being 48"l, 1/2" is going to be the minimum. You need to find a calculator that will tell you how thick the glass needs to be.

The height really is the most important factor in thickness but the length does somewhat make a small difference.

I think the you will want a safety factor of 5 for a rimless.

1/2" glass would be obsurd. The tank would weigh more than the water in it

Using the chart, if my tank was 15" tall, 6mm glass would be recommended. Mine will be 12" tall. 6mm=0.236inches, which is a hair smaller that 1/4". I would feel comfortable with 1/4 glass. Thanks for the chart Michael
