So I was having a discussion with my mother who spent 20 years teaching and writing for grade school, about trying to educate my 8 and 10 year old about reefs and captive systems such as what we have in our homes. I really try and promote their reading and self education as much as I try to teach them myself. What I have realized is how few books and material there is that is age appropriate that has semi detailed information in it. Most books are. Here is a picture of a reef. Look at all the pretty corals. lol My 8 year old girl constantly wants more info to read. She asks questions like how do corals eat, and ect. You just really cannot find anything that gives her the details she needs without confusing her. This left me thinking. As we have all seen, there is mass panic amongst the tang police that finding Dory is going to destroy the planet. My general feeling on this has always been. you just cannot fix stupid. Well this is true amongst most adults, but you can educate the young and make it so they tell their parents that while the movie is kewl that they know that tangs require a proper habitat and so on.. So here is my thought.. Instead of bitching and complaining as a community, why not create educational books for the kids in the age group that really matters the most? Write books that fill their minds with wonders and truths instead of green peace war mantras. Am I off base or could this work?

I basically always prefer green peace war mantras, or war mantras of any kind. What's the fun in finding solutions when you can just blast people on the Internet?

My kids would love a book like that. We have a book like that that's about the human body and how it works (with flaps and everything). Also a weather one and a farm-to-table one. An ocean one would round out the nonfiction collection nicely. If my 4 year old can handle it, I think most kids could.

that's a great idea. the only way things are going to change are by teaching the young.
