I don't know much if anything about mangroves. I do know that they look pretty sweet though and would compliment my macro tank nicely. I need your help with this one though guys.

What I want to do is plant the mangroves into a oriental style flower pot which will sit next to my aquarium. Of course I want it plumbed into my system, probably off of a T from the main pump. I have no idea how to plumb it, lighting to use or anything but I know I want it!

Here is a somewhat recent shot of the overall area.

The flower pot will go on the right side of the aquarium. Something along the lines of this

I just found the picture with a quick google search. Of course I am up for different pots if you find something cooler.

So how do I do this? Plumbing? Avoiding overflowing/flooding? I was thinking of maybe hanging a LED pendant from the ceiling for light but open to other ideas. Also need to figure out substrate for the pot and I would assume I would need to run a liner or something so chemicals/paint from the pot don't leach into my system.

Thoughts??

Newp. just the stalks (not even the whole stalk-just the thickish bottom part )and a few roots.

Lighting/ par 38 from home depot

Flower pot/ should be no problem, fired clay and glazes pose no problem in the tank. Drilling for an overflow may be a slow process as it is like drilling really thick glass.

Substrate/ mine are in a few inches of sand and seem to love it.

Wicked has some great mangroves in his 55 sump. He sprays them with ro water. I don't think they get water from the roots in the water but from the bottom of the leafs. His are also in some sand.

I would look to get a deepish container to give a good 8"+ sand bed, and look for somebody's tear down sand to start it with as the organic decay (fertilizer/food) is already in place.
Boogie- I believe those are called gametes.

i used 1\2 a bucket of Mineral Mud in the bottom of my fuge aprox 4i inches with 2 inches of sand on top and my mangroves are flourishing in it. i do not spray the leaves. i started with just stalks also and after a month or so little bulbs began to bloom now they all have at least 2 nodes of leaves and are looking great.

as they grow they need to be sprayed for 2 reasons;
1-mangroves do not derive much water from the salt water.
2-what little water they do pull from the salt water also forces them to pull salt, which they excrete from their leaves, the excretion can block light, and cause the leaves to wilt and drop when left unchecked.
The bottom line is it tends to rain quite a bit where these trees grow, more over, it never rains indoors.
