Under Tank Pads?

This should be a pretty simple answer, but what are the tank pads you guys are putting under your tanks? Are they necessary for rimless tanks? What are they made out of? Ive seen some that are like 1/2" styrofoam which look terrible.

Yea...1/2" rigid foam is usually used under rimless tanks to prevent any imperfections in the stand (or bits of debris, sand, etc) from causing pressure points on the bottom pane of glass/acrylic. The stand does still have to be level, so it's not wise to use it as a "quick fix" to level the tank.

Martin built the stand on my current build and did a great job of hiding that foam mat by framing out the edge of the tank with trim. Pretty slick IMO. ;)

im looking to do a rimless glass tank, but dont want 1/2 of white under it. I dont want to trim it either. Is there something else to use, that wont be so distracting from the display? How about that thin mat stuff that people put in their kitchen drawers?

How large of a tank are you using it for? I've completely de-rimmed tanks sub-10gallons and used those kitchen drawer mats with no ill effects. I think you just need thicker foam for heavier tanks. I also cut a piece of that hobbyist foam board that's about 1/4" thick to use under a rimless 12g that I helped a friend setup. You can buy it in all types of colors and can usually find one close to the color of the stand so it blends in better. The 12g was set on a black stand, so the black foam board pretty much disappeared and wasn't an eyesore like a huge chunk of white rigid foam would've been.

TBH I would just get some foam board from hobby lobby or something for a tank that size. Good yoga mats are costly (my 1/4 mat that barely compresses was over $60)...and the cheap ones are pretty flimsy and would compress paper-thin too easily under the weight of even a small tank. IMHO, you might as well get a cheap placemat or drawer mat if you're considering a yoga mat.

I have used the 1/2" styrofoam insulation from the home store under all of my tanks. It is pretty easy to hide, depending on how your stand is set up.
